Filmed sex attacks on social media

MORE than 50 elite school teenagers who received video footage of an unconscious 15-year-old girl being raped by a private school boy at an eastern suburbs party are under investigation by NSW police.
The shocking footage was taken at a Mardi Gras-themed party on a mobile phone by a baby-faced teenager who shared it on social media.
News of the vile attack stunned the private school communities involved but The Saturday Telegraph can reveal it is part of a trend in which the number of children charged with sexual assaults on children has more than doubled in the past five years.
NSW Police have confirmed investigations into all aspects of the incident are continuing, including looking at those who shared the footage on social media.
A 15-year-old boy from selective Rose Bay Secondary College this week pleaded not guilty in the childrens’ court in Glebe to three charges of filming and distributing child pornography.
The footage was shared with more than 50 teenagers including the victim, who was unaware of the incident until she saw the film on the internet.
Teachers at the $35,000-a-year Cranbrook School alerted police, who this week charged another 15-year-old boy over the incident with aggravated sexual assault.
On Thursday Cranbrook School held its annual sex and relationships day for Year 9 boys.
Former sex crimes police officer Brent Sanders lectured the boys and said: “All I can say is that if he (the boy charged) had gone through the course last year he would have been very aware of the consequences of such an act.”
Australian Bureau of Statistics figures show that the number of children charged with aggravated sexual assault on another child jumped from 18 in the year to September 2012 to 61 in 2015.
Over the same period indecent sexual assaults by children on children jumped from 30 to 99.
Parenting expert Dr Justin Coulson said easy access to pornography was changing the way children behaved.
“I cannot express enough how dreadfully pornography is impacting on our young people’s behaviour,” he said.
Melinda Tankard Reist, co-founder of Collective Shout, is regularly invited to speak at schools about the escalating impact of pornography on teenagers, especially boys.
Girls tell me all the time that they have been given drinks and wake up to discover they have been molested and their pictures are put online. It is routine,” she said.
“In the last week I have had three young girls approach me after I spoke at their school and say they did not realise what had happened to them was sexual assault.”
Some girls even believe it is their fault because they were drunk.
“It is never right to blame the victim. The law states clearly that a young woman who is under the influence of alcohol is unable to consent and any young man who takes advantage of her could go to jail for a long time,” she said.
“A lot of times boys don’t think they have done anything wrong. They say ‘she was drunk, she was asking for it and she deserved what happened to her’.”
She said it was rare for a boy to step in and help.
“Good guys” who did step up were teased and ridiculed by their mates, she said.
