LYNNWOOD, Wash. - A Lynnwood man is accused of raping nearly a dozen women he met through drug and alcohol recovery programs, and detectives believe more victims may be out there.
Lynnwood Police started investigating Vincent McPherson, 32, for suspicion of rape in late February, after four women came forward to share their stories.
According to the Snohomish County superform, the women told detectives they met McPherson at drug and alcohol recovery programs. They reported the rapes after a mutual friend posted a message on Facebook about McPherson.
"It's horrible," said Bryan Seely who met McPherson four years ago at a recovery program.
McPherson was staying at Seely's Lynnwood home when he was arrested. He moved in a few weeks before Seely learned of the allegations.
"I absolutely don't support any of the things that he did, but we have a criminal justice for a reason. I think it's doing its job," said Seely.
McPherson is accused of raping at least eight women - many young and recently sober. One woman said McPherson appeared to be spiritual and had an impressive story of sobriety which drew her in.
Other victims said McPherson offered his home as a safe place when the women were worried about relapsing.
"There's a lot of these types of 12-Step Recovery Programs where people come in at their most vulnerable and people seek to prey on that," said Seely.
Some of the women say McPherson became aggressive- they repeatedly told him no but he refused to stop. One victim said McPherson raped her in January and February. She said McPherson later admitted to her that he also raped her when she was passed out on heroin and Xanax. The woman said McPherson told her that he raped and touched at least 12 women and "needed to make amends."
Some of the women said McPherson sent them texts or Facebook messages after the assaults saying that he "wanted to make amends." The assaults caused some of the women to relapse and seek treatment.
"I still support him as a human who makes mistakes. Maybe the right place for him is in jail for a long time," Seely said.
McPherson was arrested for suspicion of one count of second-degree rape and three counts of third-degree rape. He made his initial appearance in Snohomish County court on Thursday where his bail was set at $250,000.
