NOIDA: A 20-year-old man was arrested on Friday for raping and strangling a 15-year-old Class IX student, who had gone missing on April 24. The accused, Yashveer, confessed to the police that he had lured the girl with the promise of a smartphone and then taken the girl from a Noida village to Hapur, where he raped and killed her.
Girendra Pal Singh, SHO of Sector 49 police station, said that the mother of the girl had registered a complaint of kidnapping against an unknown person on April 24. According to the man's account, he raped and killed her on May 2.
Singh said that preliminary investigation revealed that Yashveer lived in the same neighbourhood and was in a relationship with her.
The police said the girl demanded a smartphone but her family could not afford it. "The girl then told Yashveer, who provided her with a phone," the police said, adding that when the girl returned home with the phone, the family members rebuked her. "She was told to return the phone to Yashveer," the police said.
The girl went to Yashveer's house but did not return. It was then the family members registered a case of abduction at the Sector 49 police station. Yashveer was finally arrested in Sarfabad on Friday after a monthlong manhunt.
