THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: In a tragic incident, two teenage rape survivors, who were housed in the Aftercare Home under social justice department at Anchalummoodu in Kollam, committed suicide. The girls were found hanging from the staircase railing in the carehome on Thursday morning.
Police said that the girls, aged 17 and 15, were found hanging by the other inmates, who woke up around 5am. Police recovered suicide notes from the bodies, in which they had mentioned that they were fed-up with this life and thus ending their lives.
The 17-year-old girl hails from Oachira and was brought here three months ago after she was raped by an NRI, who was her neighbour. The accused had escaped to the Gulf after committing the crime.
The 15-year-old girl was brought to the carehome one month ago after her father raped her. The father is currently in judicial custody. One of the girls was a Class XII student and the other a Class X student.
The state child rights commission has registered a case suo motu in connection with the incident. The commission has also sought reports from Kollam district collector, city police commissioner, district child welfare officer and Aftercare Home superintendent in this regard.
Health and social justice department minister K K Shylaja visited the family of both the girls when their bodies were brought to the Medical College Hospital for postmortem and consoled them.
The minister also promised them appropriate action. She ordered the department secretary to conduct a probe after removing the superintendent of the Aftercare Home from the current post.
