ANAHEIM, CA — The late 1970s serial rapist and murderer's death penalty verdict was upheld yesterday by the California Supreme Court. The "Bedroom Basher," Gerald Parker, committed a string of home invasion rape-murders in Orange County in the late 1970s, according to Orange County District Attorney Tony Rackauckas.
The "Bedroom Basher" murders in Anaheim, Costa Mesa and Tustin went unsolved until 1996, when DNA connected Parker to each of the killings. Parker was already in prison on unrelated parole violations according to Rackauckas.
"After DNA linked the physical evidence from the crime scenes to Parker, he was read his Miranda rights by Costa Mesa, Tustin, and Anaheim Police, respectively, five different times while he was incarcerated in state prison, waived his rights, and gave detailed confessions," Rackauckas said.
Parker, a former Marine, was convicted by a jury in October of 1998 for murdering five women in the first-degree with the special circumstances enhancements for committing multiple murders and murder during the attempted commission or commission of a rape and burglary, according to Rackauckas.
Parker was a staff sergeant in the Marine Corps and stationed in Orange County in 1978 and 1979. Of the six women he sexually assaulted and bludgeoned five died at his hands.
The sixth woman who survived Parker's attack was nine months pregnant at the time and her unborn child died as a result of the attack, Rackauckas said.
On Oct. 20, 1998, a jury recommended the death penalty and on Jan. 21, 1999, the Superior Court Judge Frank Briseno sentenced Parker to death.
"'Bedroom Basher' Gerald Parker not only devastated all of these families in his callous, brutal rape and murders, but he struck terror in countless households who lived in fear of these unsolved murders," Rackauckas said.
Though Parker appealed, stating the prosecutor wrongfully dismissed two African- American jurors, and that his confessions should be suppressed because his Miranda rights were violated among other reasons. The California Supreme Court rejected all the arguments in a 66-page opinion, according to Rackauckas.
"This case is a perfect example of how some murderers are so evil that the only punishment that even begins to address their heinous crimes is the death penalty," he said. "It is my hope that Parker's victims and their families can sleep just a little better knowing that the California Supreme Court acknowledged that justice was served at sentencing and affirmed today."

A convicted serial rapist already serving a 15- to 125-year prison sentence could be facing new charges in a 30-year-old case.
Richard Gwinn will now be charged with a cold case rape in Richmond, Indiana. He was moved to the Wayne County Jail in Richmond from his prison cell at the Chillicothe Correctional Institution.
Gwinn, who has admitted to committing no less than 30 rapes, has been locked up since 1990. He will be up for parole in 2020. The prison sentence he is serving are for rapes and burglaries in Auglaize, Shelby, Clark and Hamilton counties.
The Richmond rape was committed in 1987 but police did not make a link to Gwinn until 2013 when he already was incarcerated. Gwinn confessed to beating, binding and raping a woman in her bedroom investigators reported.
Gwinn told police that he would chose victims randomly. He selected Wayne County for a crime because "nobody knew him there."
Even if Gwinn gets out of prison in Ohio, he will be headed straight back to a Florida penitentiary to serve two life sentences for rape convictions in that state.

A serial sex offender who preyed on women in Harrow and Ealing has been found guilty of carrying out a string of attacks.
Sinuthujaan Yoganathan was found guilty of five sexual assaults and one attempted sexual assault following a three week trial at Isleworth Crown Court on Monday (June 5).
The 32-year-old will be sentenced on July 28, following the successful joint investigation by officers from Ealing and Harrow CID.
Yoganathan, from St Margaret’s Avenue in Harrow, struck between April and July last year in the PerivaleNortholt and Harrow areas, targeting lone females late at night in order to sexually assault them.
Police said there was no DNA evidence linking the attacks to Yoganathan, but said it was “beyond reasonable doubt” that he carried out the offences.
The lead investigator warned there may be other unreported victims of Yoganathan.
Scotland Yard say the method and description of the suspect led them to link the crimes.
In one attack a car was found to have been used by the suspect - a white Audi A6 saloon.
On August 14, 2016, officers on patrol of the area affected by the attacks, saw a white Audi A6.
They stopped the car and its driver - identified as Yoganathan - was subsequently arrested in connection with the investigation.
A search of his home address found a distinctive Scotland football shirt that matched a description of what the suspect was wearing in the July 10 2016 offence.
Five of the victims also went on to positively identified Yoganathan as their attacker.
In interview Yoganathan could give no explanation for being identified as the attacker in five of the offences, and during his trial, gave a completely different version of events to what he had said to police in interview.
In one instance, when shown CCTV of his car in the area of attacks, and asked to explain how his football shirt matched the description of that worn by the attacker, he attempted to blame someone he knew, saying he had access to his cars and clothes.
He later admitted the person in the CCTV was in fact himself.
Speaking afterwards, DI Tom Williams said: “I am pleased with this guilty verdict, especially for the brave victims who had to suffer Yoganathan’s attacks.
“I would like to thank them for their courage throughout our investigation and this prosecution.
“The evidence that our team worked to gather put beyond reasonable doubt the offences that Yoganathan had carried out.
“It is possible that there may be other, unreported victims of Yoganathan, or even similar attacks.
"I hope this conviction shows victims that we will do all we can to bring serious offenders in these cases before a court.”

MADISON COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) - A serial rapist in Madison County has been sentenced after the sexual assault of two women in Canton back in 2015.
Madison and Rankin Counties’ District Attorney Michael Guest announced that Laddarious Keon Hobson pled guilty to sexual battery and burglary involving two Canton women and was sentenced to serve 55 years in the custody of the Mississippi Department of Corrections.
Hobson will be required to register as a sex offender once he is released from custody.
On July 4, 2015, the Canton Police Department received a 911 call from a 68-year-old victim who reported that an individual armed with a knife had forced his way into her home and sexually assaulted her.
The victim was able to give police a description of the suspect prior to being transported to the the University of Mississippi Medical Center where a rape kit was performed and later tested at the crime lab where a DNA profile of the suspect was developed.
On October 9, 2015, the Canton Police Department was contacted and requested to respond to a home where a developmentally challenged female had been sexually assaulted.
Police arrived and spoke with the victim’s mother and learned that an individual possessing a can of mace forced his way into the house where he physically and sexually assaulted her daughter.
The victim’s mother was able to give a description of the suspect that matched the defendant in the earlier sexual assault.
The victim was taken to the hospital and a rape kit was performed. The crime lab tested the rape kit and was able to develop a DNA profile of the suspect.
Several days later, the Canton Police Department developed Hobson as a suspect. The mother, of the victim who had been assaulted the week prior, was able to pick Hobson out of a photo lineup. On October 15, 2015, he was arrested and when questioned he denied involvement.
A DNA sample was collected from Hobson and after being tested, the DNA matched the samples collected from the two assaults.
Hobson has five prior felony convictions and was on probation at the time of these crimes. He was previously convicted of auto burglary in Madison County and had been convicted of automobile theft, felony eluding of a law enforcement officer, escape and destruction of public property in Yazoo County.

Police in Thika town have arrested a young man suspected to be the ringleader in a series of rape cases, muggings and maiming of residents.

Area AP commandant Peter Nzimbi said they arrested the suspect at his hideout in Kiandutu slums after trailing him for a while.

Nzimbi said more crimes are being committed in Kiandutu, Majengo and Kiganjo slums.
He said young men have been terrorising residents but noted officers were deployed to end their activities.
"We are conducting patrols in areas including Kiandutu, Kiganjo and Makongeni which have young boys who can be troublesome. We will make sure we contain the situation," the AP boss said.
Koinange was taken to Thika police station and will be arraigned once police complete investigations.

GROSSE POINTE WOODS, Mich. - A man charged with raping a woman in a home with her young child in Grosse Pointe Woods is under investigation for additional incidents, officials said.
Gerald Day, 27, is charged with breaking into a woman's home April 15 while she slept with her 4-year-old son.
Grosse Pointe Woods police said the woman woke up to Day standing over her bed. He is accused of terrorizing the woman with her child right next to her.
"After a period of time, Day forced the complainant into the kitchen and ordered her to take off her clothes," the detective said. "When she refused, he put the gun to her forehead and asked her, 'Do you want to die?'"
Police said Day went on to sexually assault the woman.
Day was also arrested in Grosse Pointe Farms when he tried to break into several other homes.
He might also face charges in a Grosse Pointe case in which a teenager was forced into her basement at gunpoint before her attacker was scared off.
Investigators are working to link all the cases together, raising the question whether a serial rapist was on the loose.
"I just don't believe some of it, no," Day's mother said Thursday outside court.

Police have arrested a 30-year-old man suspected to be the leader of a gang said to be behind a spate of kidnappings and rape in Awendo and Uriri.

The suspect was arrested by Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) officers two days ago and is awaiting an identification parade. County Criminal Investigations Officer Benedict Kigen said the suspect was arrested in Awendo town after a tip from the public.

The police have been on his trail for a while following the arrest of his accomplices earlier. Mr Kigen said the suspect was tested in hospital and found to have acute gonorrhoea and other sexually transmitted Infections (STD).

He is suspected to have infected his rape victims, including children.

"We will charge him with knowingly infecting his victims with STIs. In the past month, we have had at least five cases of women and children being kidnapped, dragged into the sugarcane plantations and raped. The suspects have been demanding ransom from the victims' families," he said.

During interrogation The DCI boss told The Standard that during interrogation, the suspect, who has only one arm, confessed to being the gang leader and said he was jobless and "doing what he knows best".

"We are warning the others out there that the law will soon catch up with them," Kigen added.

The arrest comes barely two weeks after this newspaper broke the story that residents in Awendo and Uriri had raised concerns about the spate of kidnappings in the area.

Early this year, one of the gang members was lynched by boda boda riders after he and his colleagues waylaid a female teacher and raped her in the sugarcane plantations before demanding a Sh25,000 ransom.

Their latest victim was a 30-year-old widow and mother of four young children who tearfully narrated to The Standard how she spent two cold nights in a cane plantation at the mercy of two kidnappers.

From her home in Manyatta, Awendo, the woman, who depends on menial jobs to survive, looked traumatised. She recalled how she had left for home on Sunday evening from Awendo town, where she had gone to look for work for the day. The widow said as she walked home, a man emerged with a panga and led her into the thick plantation where he raped her.
