South African student was raped and killed in carjacking

Four men have been arrested for the rape and murder of a South African student after a high speed police chase in the slain woman's stolen car.
CCTV images show the dramatic pursuit by police officers of two suspects the day after the horrific car-jacking that shocked South Africans.

Last Friday morning Hannah Cornelius, 21, was sitting in her car outside an apartment complex in Stellenbosch, in Western Cape province, and talking with a male friend, Cheslin Marsh, when four men surrounded the vehicleThe South African reports.

Marsh was thrown into the boot and Cornelius was forced into the backseat.

The men drover the pair, who attended the presitigious Stellenbosch University, 20km away to Kraaifontein, outside Cape Town where they pelted Marsh with bricks and stabbed him before he eventually escaped.

The attackers drove Cornelius to another location where they reportedly raped, stabbed and strangled her. They then dumped her body on a nearby road.

Marsh managed to outrun his attackers and climbed over the back wall of nearby home where Averal Fortuin and his wife Margaret discovered the blood drenched student.

Averal Fortuin told News 24  “he was barefoot and covered in blood”.

Mr Fortuin said Mr Marsh told him: “If I hadn’t jumped over the wall, I would have been dead.”

CCTV from the following day captured the culmination of a dramatic police chase involving Cornelius's stolen Volkswagen Golf which led to the arrest of two of the suspects. Two more suspects have since been arrested.

Marsh suffered head injuries and a broken arm and remains in a Cape Town hospital.

Cornelius's family were outraged by her killing.

"It's inexplicable; flippin' animals,” her uncle, Dries Cornelius told Times Live. “Why? What is the reason behind killing her if you already have the car?"

He added that the family were still “just trying to process it”.

The Stellenbosch student community has also reacted with shock and held demonstrations calling for increased security.

University of Stellenbosch Rector Professor Wim de Villiers said: “Our campus community is shocked by this senseless death and our hearts go out to the family and friends of the student who lost her life, as well as the student who was injured.”
