A former football player for Vanderbilt University was found guilty of the 2013 rape of an unconscious woman on the floor of a dorm room. Brandon Banks, now 23, is the third ex-football player from the Nashville university to be charged in the assault.
After 15 hours of deliberation, a jury found Banks guilty on two charges of aggravated rape and aggravated sexual battery and not guilty on five other charges, The Associated Press reported. Banks faces a minimum sentence of 15 years in prison.
Banks is one of four men who were charged after police investigating a report of vandalism at the dorm found surveillance footage of the men carrying an unconscious woman into a room, according to BuzzFeed News.
The investigation uncovered 14 deleted videos and photos of the menraping and sexually assaulting the woman, The Tennessean reported. In recovered footage, Banks is reportedly seen penetrating the woman with a water bottle as his teammate Brandon Vandenburg urges him on, according to WTVF in Nashville.
During the trial this week, Banks took the stand and accused his former teammates of bullying him into participating in the assault and taking pictures of the victim, according to The Tennessean. Banks admitted to sexually touching her and said that he penetrated her with the bottle because Vandenburg told him to.
Banks also said that he feared his teammates would beat him up if he didn’t join them in the assault, AP reported.
Vandenburg, who was friends with the victim and had met her at a bar on the night of the assault, was found guilty in 2016 on five counts of aggravated rape, two counts of aggravated sexual battery and one count of unlawful photography during the assault, which took place in his dorm room. He was sentenced to 17 years in prison.
Corey Batey, another former football player at Vanderbilt, was also convicted and sentenced to 15 years in prison. The fourth former player, Jaborian “Tip” McKenzie, testified against his teammates in hopes of making a plea deal in his own case.
The victim took the stand Wednesday during Banks’ trial and recalled what she could on the night of the rape, WTVF reported.
She said that the last thing she remembered was Vandenburg, whom she had been dating, giving her a blue drink at the bar. The next morning, she said, she woke up alone on the floor of a dorm room that she didn’t recognize.
The victim did not know she had been sexually assaulted until detectives showed her footage from that night. She testified that she did not know Banks before learning of the assault.
Wednesday’s trial marked the fifth time she testified against her assailants, according to AP.
A judge will determine Banks’ sentence.

The small northeast Kansas town of Holton will be torn again next week as the second in a series of trials starts for a well-known local man charged with sexually assaulting several women.
The polarizing accusations against 22-year-old Jacob Ewing in this community of some 3,300 people have prompted his supporters to put signs in their front yards and to pack court proceedings wearing T-shirts emblazoned with messages of support for him.
On the other side, advocates for the women he is accused of assaulting have formed a support group on Facebook called "I support the Victims of Jacob Ewing" that also has organized volunteers to sit in the courtroom during proceedings.
A jury acquitted Ewing in May on charges of sexually assaulting a 13-year-old girl on the hood of his car in a local cemetery when he was 19. He now faces three additional trials dealing with rape and other accusations levied against him by five adult women. The trial that begins Monday is on charges of rape and aggravated criminal sodomy involving two of those women.
Additional trials are scheduled in August and October. In May, Ewing was also charged with sexual exploitation of a child involving child pornography in a separate case not yet set for trial.
Special prosecutor Jacqie Spradling confirmed Ewing is still in custody, but declined further comment.
The 22-year-old woman behind the Facebook page supporting victims is Savhannah Jurgensmeier, who said she started the network because of how badly she was treated when she was raped in Holton at age 15 by someone else.
"I wanted to show these girls that they are not alone — that they do have support and that they do have people behind them," Jurgensmeier said.
Holton resident Doug Holthaus attended the first trial to show his support for Ewing and said he will try to attend the second.
"I am not ashamed to admit it," he said. "I just knew Jacob when he was in high school. I've known Jacob for a while."
Holthaus believes Ewing being targeted because he comes from a prominent family.
"If they can take him down and a prominent family down in this town, they can take anybody down," he said. "That is the message that is being sent."
Lawyers struggled to find impartial jurors during that first trial, and Ryan Alexander, chairman of Washburn University's criminal justice department said it might be pretty difficult again.
Ewing's attorney and his mother did not respond to a request for comment. Before an online fundraising page for the family was taken down, a description under a photo of him and his mother read: "Recently we have had some legal issues that are scary and common for young men his age. Jake is looking at some serious accusations and I will continue to support him."
Jurgensmeier, who graduated in the same class as Ewing and now works as an advocate for sexual assault victims, recounted how Holton residents turned against her after she reported she was raped by someone she had been dating seven years ago. But unlike others, Ewing at that time was "super supportive" as she worked through the experience.
"He was a great guy, he was nice to everyone," she said. "But what I think that this community doesn't understand is those are the people who commit these horrifying acts; it's not a stranger."
The allegations against Ewing have been difficult for Holton residents, who have known him for his entire life, said Michelle McCormick, program director for the YWCA's Center for Safety and Empowerment.
"Community members have felt like they had to choose a side, and there has been a lot of organizing by both camps," McCormick said. "And there has been a lot of pressure, the sort of pressure that comes from living in a small, tight-knit community."
WEBER COUNTY, Utah – Nicholas Alan Johnson is being charged with 11 counts of unlawful sexual activity with a minor.
According to the police report, one of the two victims, reported to her therapist that she had been raped early Thursday morning by 20-year-old Johnson, a friend of her older brother.
Police say she disclosed forced oral and vaginal sex in his car twice last week and this had been an ongoing issue since February.
Weber County Sheriff’s Office received the report that day and began collecting evidence for a sexual assault investigation.
The victim disclosed that on Thursday night she, her brother and Johnson had decided to go to McDonald’s to get food. She stated she got in the car with Johnson, who then left the house without waiting for her brother.
According to her statement, on the way to McDonald’s Johnson stopped the car and proceeded to have oral and vaginal sex with her.
Her brother stated, while driving to McDonald’s alone, Johnson called him and told him he was having car troubles and needed jumper cables. The brother claimed he headed home to look for jumper cables, but then received another call approximately ten minutes later from Johnson saying his car had started.
After regrouping and eating at McDonald’s, her brother stated that while he was using the restroom, the pair again left together.
The victim claims Johnson again stopped the car and made her have sex with him. She disclosed that Johnson did not use a condom during either incident.
According to the victims statement she had sexual relations with Johnson six to eight times beginning in February. All times but one occurring in his vehicle.
A search warrant was obtained for Johnson’s car and it was towed to the Weber County Sheriff’s Office for processing.
Johnson was contacted by officers at his apartment in Layton and he was brought in for questioning. The record states Johnson confessed to having sex with the victim twice the previous week and several times around February.
Johnson also confessed to three accounts of oral sex with a friend of the first victim, another 14-year-old, while he and the victims were together.
Police records state Johnson denied that any of the sexual encounters with either victim were forced.
Johnson was booked into jail for 11 counts of unlawful sexual activity with a minor, according to the police report. In total police say Johnson confessed to 8 incidents with first 14-year-old victim and 3 incidents with the second.

Ocean City Police charged an 18-year-old man with rape and second-degree sex offense after he allegedly attacked a woman in a condominium bathroom Tuesday evening.
The victim reported the assault around 6:20 p.m., and was taken to Atlantic General Hospital by police for examination. While she was in the hospital, the woman told police that she was assaulted by Cameron G. Broaddus, of Coatesville, Maryland during a party at a condominium at 115th Street.
When the woman excused herself to use the bathroom, Broaddus followed her, according to the charging documents. He would not leave the bathroom, even though the woman told him repeatedly to leave.
As the woman sat down on the toilet, Broaddus pulled his pants down and approached her. When the woman pulled away, she hit the back of her head on the toilet seat.
At that point, Broaddus grabbed the victim’s head and forced her to have oral sex, the police report said. He also touched the woman inappropriately and attempted to kiss her.
Police said Broaddus then picked up the victim, pushed her against the sink and assaulted her, according to the police.
The victim said that she told him repeatedly to stop, but he did not listen. After the assault, she fell to the ground and cried while hearing her friend knock on the door. Eventually, her friend forced her way in the bathroom.
The friend said that she was concerned when the victim did not return from the bathroom after a few minutes. She got a mutual friend to unlock the bathroom door, but found it blocked by Broaddus.
When police interviewed Broaddus, he said that he was alone with the victim in the bathroom for 15 seconds and denied being there when the door was shut.
Nurses at AGH said that the woman sustained a knot on the back of her head, in addition to other injuries.
DENVER – A Denver jury on Friday convicted a University of Colorado-Denver student of multiple felonies after he took an unconscious woman from a Halloween party and raped her inside his apartment.
John D. Kennedy, 23, was found guilty of all the charges he faced: second-degree kidnapping—victim of a sexual offense; sexual assault—victim physically helpless; sexual assault—victim incapable of appraising nature of her conduct; and one count of unlawful sexual contact.
Charges were first filed against Kennedy in November 2015, and his trial lasted six days.
He was a student on the CU-Denver Auraria campus and had been at a Halloween part with other students.
The Denver District Attorney’s Office says that Kennedy waited until everyone had cleared a shared hallway at their apartment building, then took the woman—who was inebriated and had been placed there by her friends for her safety—into his apartment across the hall.
He started sexually assaulting her, but a friend discovered that the woman was missing and went into Kennedy’s apartment and confronted him.
She was completely unaware she had ever left the first apartment or that she had been raped, and never gave consent.
Surveillance video showed Kennedy dragging the woman into his apartment, and DNA evidence from a rape kit pointed to Kennedy being the person who kidnapped and assaulted the woman.
Kennedy eventually confessed to the crimes. He is scheduled to be sentenced Sept. 18.

An Oakwood man faces statutory rape and child molestation charges in connection with incidents which occurred with a teenage girl over a period of more than 18 months.
Caleb Darrell Megginson, 19, is charged with two counts of statutory rape and aggravated child molestation, according to warrants. He was being held at the Hall County Jail without bond pending a committal hearing scheduled for July 10. He was arrested June 22.
One of the child molestation charges alleges Megginson had sex with the girl between Oct. 1, 2015, and July 12, 2016, when she was 14 years old. The other molestation charge alleges incidents between Jan. 1-31, 2017. The statutory rape charge alleges an incident on April 17 of this year.
The case remains under investigation by the Hall County Sheriff’s Office, according to spokesman Lt. Scott Ware.

A NSW teenager, who was gang raped while intoxicated, cried and asked for her mother to be called after being found in a dishevelled state in a room with two boys, a Sydney court has heard.
Christian Dickens, 22, Aaron Jensen, 23, and two 21-year-old men, who were underage at the time and therefore can't be named, are accused of attacking the 15-year-old girl at a Blue Mountains house party in 2012.
The girl's former friend told their trial on Tuesday that a group of boys in the doorway of the room laughed when she asked: "Where is (the 15-year-old)?"
She said there were two boys still in the room when she entered and her friend's tights and underwear were "dishevelled".
"I need to go home, I need to go home, someone ring my mum," the victim said, according to the witness in her evidence to the Downing Centre District Court.
She said another friend asked the crying girl: "Why would you let them do this to you?"
The friend giving evidence on Tuesday, who was 16 and drunk at the time of the attack, admitted her memory of the night was "patchy" and that she talked to two other former friends about the night's events before testifying.
She was repeatedly questioned about differences between her various police statements.
The woman was asked whether it was possible the victim was with her in the kitchen at some stage rather than in the room where the alleged gang rape took place.
"Anything is possible if I don't remember," she said.
Crown prosecutor Belinda Baker has previously said the jury would hear the victim was told "shut up, you love it slut'" during the alleged assault.
A man who attended the party said he jumped through a window to find himself in the room where Jensen was "fingering" the girl.
The witness said he asked the teenager for a "gobby" but started making his way out of the room after she said no in a slurred manner.
He said four youths were in the room as he stood in the doorway for a few minutes.
One was forcing the girl to give him oral sex while another was making her give him a "hand job", he said.
The trial continues.

City police have arrested a University of Tulsa soccer player on allegations he raped a student athlete after escorting her from a party.
Lesley Nchanji, 20, was arrested on complaints of first-degree rape, sexual battery and two counts of forcible sodomy, court records show.
TU said in a statement that Nchanji is banned from the campus pending the outcome of a university investigation.
According to an affidavit, Nchanji told police that a witness asked him to take a 19-year-old freshman track athlete home from the party June 10. However, the witness told investigators that Nchanji himself had “suggested that he take the victim back to her dorm because she was too drunk,” the affidavit states.
Nchanji “stated that he carried the woman to her dorm but she was unable to tell him which room she lived (in) and she did not have a key,” the affidavit says.
Nchanji walked with the woman to his apartment, located in the 2800 block of East Eighth Street, carried her up the stairs and placed her in his bed. He told police the woman then removed her clothes and pulled him onto the bed.
The affidavit says he admitted to engaging in oral sex with her but denied other sexual activity happened, telling police if she had not vomited he would have had sex with her.
The woman told police she had consumed “approximately eight shots” of vodka and that she did not recall how she arrived at Nchanji’s apartment. Several witnesses told police she was heavily intoxicated.
The woman told investigators she had no recollection of Nchanji’s apartment before waking up there in the morning, the affidavit says.
Nchanji is being held in the Tulsa Jail in lieu of a $200,000 bond, according to jail records.
He is scheduled to make an initial court appearance Thursday.
TU said Nchanji has been dismissed from the soccer team.

A Jones County man has been charged with rape after an inappropriate sexual encounter with a juvenile was reported to authorities, according to the sheriff.
The sheriff said Saturday a family member of a 13 year-old female contacted the Jones County Sheriff’s Department regarding the incident involving Jordan Beasley, 19 of Laurel.
The victim and a witness were interviewed on Monday by Jones County Sheriff’s Investigators, reporting the juvenile and Beasley had found themselves alone together hours before the incident took place.
The victim had known Beasley for a while, according to the sheriff.
Authorities contacted Beasley, who voluntarily came to the Sheriff’s Department for an interview.  Beasley admitted to the inappropriate encounter and was charged with statutory rape.
Beasley is scheduled for an initial appearance at Jones County Justice Court on Wednesday, June 28, 2017 at 10:30 a.m.

A 15-YEAR-OLD rapist faces being locked up for attacking a young girl.
The teenager preyed on the six year-old at a flat in Glasgow's west end in 2015.
He also molested another girl who was around eight at the time.
A jury heard harrowing evidence that the older child had seen the other being raped.
The sex attacker – who was 14 at the time – had denied the crimes.
Prosecutors said he had made it appear the young victims were “devious, accomplished liars”.
But, he was found guilty of rape and sexual assault following a trial at the High Court in Glasgow.
Judge Lord Mulholland continued his bail pending sentencing next month, but ordered him to surrender his passport.
Neither the rapist nor the two victims can be identified for legal reasons.
Suspicion first arose when a concerning conversation one of the girls had with other children was overheard.
Police were then called in the next day before the pair had to relive what happened.
The older girl said she saw the teenager do a “bad thing” to the younger child.
The court heard the accused came from a “hard-working family”.
The 15-year-old gave evidence during the trial and denied his guilt.
Prosecutors said the boy had implied the victims were “devious children, accomplished liars who have concocted a story against him for no reason”.
The teenager was put on the sex offenders list as sentencing was deferred for reports.
