14-year-old-girl brutally raped by 3 minor boys, left unconscious on sidewalk
GREENFIELD, Calif. —
Three boys have been arrested in a disturbing rape case in Greenfield after a 14-year-old-girl was found unconscious and alone on a sidewalk.
The boys were booked into Juvenile Hall on charges of rape, sodomy, and oral copulation, police said Monday.
The rape victim was found August 9 lying on a sidewalk along the 100 block of Scott Circle.
She was unconscious and suffering from "near lethal levels" of alcohol at 8:45 p.m., police said.
She was transported to a Salinas hospital, where medical staff member found evidence that she had been sexually assaulted. The girl was then airlifted to a San Jose trauma center.
The Greenfield Police Department and Monterey County District Attorney's Office launched an investigation into what happened to the girl, and how she ended up on the sidewalk alone.
Police Cmdr. Ed Rodriguez said investigators determined that the girl had been socializing with several teenage boys as they drank hard liquor.
"This is awful. It's one of the worst assault cases we could possibly investigate. When she passed out is when she was brutally sexually assaulted by these three boys," Rodriguez said.
Video footage from a nearby home's security system recorded the boys returning to the victim's home, carrying her from the car while she was unconscious, leaving her on the sidewalk, and fleeing from the area," police said.
Rodriguez said the girl could have died if she was not found that night.
Police tracked down witnesses who helped identify the three boys. One boy is 17-years-old. The other two boys are 16-years-old. They are Greenfield High School students.
Police questioned the boys and searched their homes.
"Investigators were able to gather incriminating evidence after searching the suspects' homes and a vehicle pursuant to a search warrant," police said.
One of the three boys is also under investigation for a similar incident that happened on July 11. A 12-year-old girl was found "dumped" on the 300 block of 9th Street in Greenfield, police said. She was also suffering from potentially lethal levels of alcohol.
Police said there was no evidence that the 12-year-old girl was sexually assaulted.
Investigators are hoping any other potential victims will come forward.
The three boys' names were not released by investigators because they are minors.
South Monterey County Joint Union High School District superintendent Brian Walker said counselors are available for students on campus, and described the incident as a "traumatic event."
