18-year-old girl, 7-year-old girl, raped, strangled to death
Svay Rieng provincial police are hunting for a group of men that raped an 18-year-old girl and then strangled her to death before tying a rock to her leg and dumping her body in a canal last week.
Meanwhile, police in Kandal and Kampot provinces on Saturday arrested suspects in two other rape and murder cases.
Sok Vuthy, Svay Rieng deputy police chief of major crimes, said yesterday that the body of Sovann Sokmalin, 18, was discovered on Friday by a group of children in Baveth commune.
“According to our investigation, the victim was caught and raped by a group of suspects,” said Mr Vuthy. “After raping her, the suspects killed her by strangling her. After killing her, the suspects tied her leg with a big stone and threw her into a canal in order to destroy the evidence.”
Buoy Sovann, 38, the victim’s father, said that he lost contact with his daughter on Wednesday, when she was on the way back home from a wedding.
In the Kandal case, provincial police arrested a 22-year-old suspect on Saturday over the rape and murder of a seven-year-old girl, who was also strangled dead and then tossed into a body of water.
Muong Vireak, a police officer with Kean Svay district police, identified the suspect as Heng Chantim, who is accused of taking the girl for a walk in rice fields before committing the crimes on Tuesday.
“While the girl followed to go for a walk with him, he brought her to a quiet place and then raped her,” said Mr Vireak. “After the rape, he killed her because he was afraid she would tell her parents.”
In the Kampot case, police on Saturday arrested a 19-year-old man accused of killing his girlfriend in Phnom Penh on Tuesday.
Hem Chandara, deputy commander of Kampot provincial police, identified the suspect as Khorn La, a construction worker living in Kampot province’s Teuk Chhou District.
Mr Chandara said the suspect is accused of bringing his girlfriend, Y Sokha, 26, to a Phnom Penh guesthouse to have sex on Tuesday, where he killed her after she revealed she was going to marry another man.
“The suspect got angry at the victim for getting engaged to another man,” said Mr Chandara. “He then killed her by strangling her.”
A cleaner later found the victim’s body, which had been stripped of her possessions.
