Patna, Aug. 13: A teenage girl is struggling for life in hospital after being gang-raped and subsequently shot at by a group of people in Buxar district yesterday evening, police said today.
The incident took place when the victim, a resident of Dumraon in Buxar district, around 100km west of Patna, had gone with her relative, Sanjay Paswan, to see her ailing paternal aunt at a village close to Ballia in neighbouring Uttar Pradesh on a motorcycle.
A youth, identified as Dilnath Ram, accosted the duo and raped her at gunpoint. Two other youths, who were in an inebriated condition, joined Dilnath and raped her.
When she resisted, one of the offenders opened fire, causing her bullet injuries. Sanjay fled the spot, apprehending attack. The trio abandoned the girl at the spot, apprehending that she had died. However, a passer-by, who disclosed his identity as Vijay Turha, a fisherman, spotted the girl lying in a pool of blood near Tilaksarai Hata.
He provided her with clothes and alerted the Ballia police under whose jurisdiction the area falls.
The police rushed to the spot on the directive of Ballia superintendent of police Sujata Singh.
The victim was admitted to the Ballia Sadar hospital, where she was operated upon late on Sunday morning.
Her condition is stated to be serious.
On being contacted, Ballia SP Sujata said Buxar police had been provided relevant information about the incident. A police team is expected to reach on Sunday to take her to Buxar where her statement would be recorded in the local court, the SP told The Telegraph over phone.
Dumraon police station house officer (SHO) Subodh Kumar said the police received information about the incident from their counterparts in Ballia. "Legal formalities are being completed to bring the rape survivor to Buxar," the SHO added.
Earlier, Dumraon sub-divisional police officer Kamlapati Singh said the police have detained three suspects for interrogation in connection with the incident. "A police team has been despatched to Ballia," he added.
An investigating officer said the girl had earlier eloped from her house with her boyfriend. She returned after the intervention of the local police.
