23-year-old jailed for filming himself raping a woman
A man was jailed after police recovered incriminating evidence of the rape, recorded by the man, while his victim was asleep.
Alex Somerfield, from Nineveh Road, Handsworth, in Birmingham, raped his victim whilst they were asleep and used the footage to blackmail her into keeping quiet.
The investigation began after the 23-year-old was reported to police by the victim after assaulting her in the street in February.
Somerfield thought he had deleted the footage but police were able to retrieve the incriminating evidence.
He pleaded not guilty, but after a four day trial at Birmingham Crown Court, he was found guilty and was sentenced to eight years in prison for rape and four years each for two counts of sexual assault to run consecutively.
Somerfield also received six months for two counts of assault and battery and 12 months for perverting the course of justice to run consecutively. He will be placed on the Sex Offender Register indefinitely and a Sexual Harm Protection Order was imposed.
Detective Constable Matt Wilson, from the force’s Public Protection Unit, said:
Somerfield had such a hold over his victim that she felt powerless to press charges, but I would like to reassure anyone who is scared to face up to their abuser that we have specialist officers who can help through every step of the process and there are a whole raft of other agencies who can offer support.
