Puducherry: Police on Sunday arrested a 66-year-old man on charges of raping an eight-year-old girl in Puducherry. The man was identified as P Kaliamoorthy from Lawspet.
According to the statement given by the girl to the child welfare committee, Kaliamoorthy, on seeing her playing alone near her house on Saturday lured her by offering chocolates and took her to an empty house belonging to his friend and raped her. The girl managed to escape by biting his hand and rushed out of the house.
A BJP functionary from the same locality, who came to know about the incident, alerted the child welfare committee (CWC). The committee directed Childline volunteers to rescue the girl. In the meantime, a social worker from the committee visited the girl and recorded her statement.
The committee and Childline authorities lodged a complaint with Lawspet police seeking action against Kaliamoorthy. The girl was admitted to Rajiv Gandhi Government Women And Children's Hospital for medical examinations to ascertain the rape charge.
Lawspet police booked Kaliamoorthy under Section 6 (punishment for aggravated penetrative sexual assault) of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (Pocso) act, 2012, and arrested him. They produced him before a magistrate, who remanded him in judicial custody.
If convicted, the man will be punished with rigorous imprisonment for a term not less than 10 years, but which may extend to life imprisonment. He will also be liable to fine.
