A 38-year-old chemistry teacher of Aradhana School in Gandhinagar has been arrested for raping his student over the past three years.
The incident came to light when the victim, a 21- year-old physiotherapy student now, tried to commit suicide reportedly following his latest attempt to rape her.
Accused Mayank Patel, a resident of Plot 713 in Sector 27 of Gandhinagar has been charged under sections 376 (rape), 506 (criminal intimidation) of the IPC and various sections of the Information Technology Act.
Victim Riya (name changed), who is a resident of Gandhinagar and studies physiotherapy at an institute in Ahmedabad, tried to hang herself at her house on Sunday night.
Her parents heard a noise in her room and managed to prevent the tragedy in time. “When they questioned her, Riya revealed that Mayank had forced her out of a course she was attending at a hotel in Ahmedabad on Sunday evening and had raped her in his car,” said police.
“She told them that Mayank had been raping her since 2014 when she was in Class 12. Mayank would pay her special attention during chemistry classes at school. In April 2014, when Riya was preparing was preparing for GUJCET, Mayank invited her to his tuition class located in Sector 26, Gandhinagar to help her prepare for the examination.
When Riya reached the tuition class she found it empty, Mayank locked the door and raped her. Mayank clicked photographs of Riya and threatened to leak them online if she refused to cater to his demands.
Mayank continued to blackmail her over the next three years.
Before the Sunday incident, Mayank raped Riya at his tuition classes on September 3,” police said.
Inspector Jatin Prajapati of Sector 21 police station said, “Mayank is married and father of a 10-year-old girl. We arrested him from his residence within hours of the FIR being filed. We have seized the accused’s mobile phone and sent it to FSL for investigation. We will also seize his car.”
