SHAHJAHANPUR: A 15-year-old girl was raped and murdered at a village in Shahjahanpur on Tuesday evening.
The victim had gone out to the field to answer nature's call around 6.30 pm but did not return for a long time, said family members.
The girl's half-naked body was found in a sugarcane field later in the night by her family members.
An FIR was filed under section 302 and 376 against a suspect, identified as Brijendra Kashyap. Police also raided the house of the accused Brijendra later in the night but he was found missing.
Upon receiving the information, superintendent of police (SP) K B Singh and additional superintendent of police (ASP) S C Shakya rushed to the village to investigate the case themselves. Forensic experts were also called to the crime spot to lift evidence.
According to family members, the victim had gone out of the house in the evening to answer nature's call in the nearby field but she never returned. When she did not come back for a long time, her family members started searching for her, and after some time they found her dead body in a sugarcane field.
The body lay naked below the waist and her dupatta was found tightly wrapped around her neck as if someone had strangled her, her family members said.
They also said that there was no other injury marks on the body and there was no sign of struggle. The body was handed over to family on Wednesday after postmortem. Giving details, Dr S C Joshi, who conducted the autopsy, said, "The girl died due to strangulation, and there were no other injuries. Slides have been prepared and these will be sent to the forensic laboratory to find out if there was rape."
Speaking to TOI, ASP S C Shakya said, "We have included section 376 in the FIR after the family members mentioned that they suspected that the girl was raped before her death. We have zeroed in on an accused and hope to arrest him soon. Initial investigation suggests that the accused probably killed the girl after failing to rape her. We have alerted all police stations in the district about the accused, who is on the run."
