Patna: A 16-year-old girl committed suicide by hanging herself in her house in Banka district after being raped by two men of her village in Banka district, around 295km southeast of Patna, on Thursday evening.
The Class X student of a government secondary school under the jurisdiction of Rajaun police station was found hanging from a ceiling fan in her house at Rajawar village of the district on Thursday evening.
The girl took the extreme step after her young brother saw Neeraj Kumar and Dipak Kumar raping her in the house on Thursday.
The girl's brother reported the incident to his mother when she returned home after working in an agriculture field.
Rajaun police station house officer (SHO) Kumar Ashish said the girl killed herself because she could not bear the trauma.
"Her body has been sent to the Sadar hospital for post-mortem," he said.
The SHO said the rapists were absconding.
The family members of Neeraj and Dipak, however, denied the allegation and said the police were implicating them in a fabricated case.
An investigating officer said the accused had earlier tried to kidnap and molest the girl, but she was saved when some residents chased away the youths and warned them of police action.
"It seems the accused had an inkling that the girl's mother was away," the officer said. "Even her young brother had gone with his mother to the agricultural fields. But he returned midway for some work and found the youths raping his sister."
The girl's father works outside the state.
The investigating officer said the post-mortem report would confirm the rape. "The viscera has been preserved to ascertain cause of death," he said. The sample would be sent to the state forensic science laboratory for test, the officer added.
