Jamshedpur: A five-year-old girl allegedly raped by an unidentified man near her house in Chhota Govindpur area, here on Sunday morning.
Police said the incident took place at a secluded spot at around 8 in the morning when the survivor had gone to defecate in the open.
A few passers-by saw the girl lying unconscious in a bush and informed police.
Local residents took the girl to the Telco hospital from where she was shifted to the MGM Hospital.
Govindpur police station in-charge Rajesh Ranjan said a probe has been initiated. "We are trying to ascertain the identity of the accused," Ranjan said.
A former woman mukhiya of Chhota Govindpur panchayat, who did not wish to be named, said police did not reach the spot on time. "We took the girl to the hospital when the police did not turn up for a long time. We felt the long wait could aggravate the girl's condition," the woman said.
At the time of going to press, a medical test on the survivor was yet to be conducted.
The family members of the girl said they do not have a toilet at home but that construction work on one is underway.
