Cab driver raped two customers
GOSHEN - A New Windsor man was arraigned on charges he raped two women who were customers in his cab.
An Orange County grand jury indicted Javier Vilchez Salazar, 34, on felony counts including two counts of first-degree rape. In Orange County Court, Vilchez Salazar’s lawyer, Michael Davis of the Legal Aid Society of Orange County, entered a not-guilty plea for his client.
Assistant District Attorney Kerry Kolek told Judge Craig Brown that Vilchez Salazar, a Yellow Cab driver, is charged with assaulting the women on separate occasions, one on Sept. 3 and one on Nov. 12. He picked up the women in his cab on the City of Newburgh waterfront, Kolek said.
“Both victims believed they were getting a safe ride home,” Kolek told the judge. Instead, she said, Vilchez Salazar drove them to New Windsor, where he sexually assaulted them, and then left them on the roadside.
One victim, a 19-year-old, was left naked and barefoot, Kolek said. A good Samaritan saw her walking on the road and came to her aid.
Kolek asked the judge to set bail at $500,000 cash or $1 million bond.
Davis asked for reasonable bail, and told the judge he prefers to make a full bail argument after prosecutors turn over more case documentation.
Brown set bail as prosecutors recommended, and granted Davis time to make the bail application.
Vilchez Salazar remains in Orange County Jail, and will return to court on Jan. 8 for a conference.
The Orange County District Attorney’s Office, City of Newburgh police and New Windsor police are asking that anyone with information regarding the two rapes in which Vichez Salazar has already been charged, or other women who may have been victimized, to contact their offices.
