Agra: In a gruesome act, a baby girl less than a year old was taken away and raped barely 50 metres from where her parents were sleeping in a tent.
The crime was committed on the intervening night of Monday and Tuesday in the trans-Yamuna area of Nunhai, under Itimad-ud-Daulah police station. The baby’s parents are from Damua in Madhya Pradesh and had come to Agra to work as daily wage labourers at the construction site of a factory.
The couple was sleeping in a tent at the time of the incident. When they awoke to find their baby missing, they started a frantic search for her and found her unconscious in the bushes 50 metres away at about 3:30 am, with injuries in her abdomen and face. They then approached the police to file an FIR.
Police at first lodged a complaint of theft of mobile and cash worth Rs 2,500. Later, on Wednesday, after the medical report confirmed sexual assault, the police stated that rape charges had been added to the FIR.
“We were exhausted after work and were sleeping in the tent when someone took away our daughter, the phone and cash. It was our neighbor who alerted us after spotting a suspicious man near the construction site. We kept searching for hours till we found her in the bushes,” said the baby’s father.
Itimad-ud-Daulah station officer Hukum Singh said, “On Tuesday night, the baby’s parents gave a written complaint of theft, not rape.”
However, on Wednesday, citing the medical report, deputy superintendent of police of Chatta, Sanjay Kumar, said the baby was raped and police were adding the charge to the FIR.
